Latest Match News: Alphas 2 - 2 Honiton 8th September 2007
Our first game of the season was eagerly anticipated and how pleased we were when we saw the condition of the pitch....well done Exeter City Council for providing such a beautiful surface .........Well worth the £500 . Then what joy as a number of dead animals rats or rabbits couldnt really tell as they were in numerous pieces had to be cleared from the pitch.... .All we needed now was for the referree to not turn up .... and guess what he didnt.
Any way onto the football
In very hot conditions both teams gave a great performance however it was Alphington who made the better start . After just 10 mins they won a free kick 20 yards out. New Captain Jake Hopton stepped up and struck a cracking right footer into the top right hand corner giving the keeper no chance. A great set piece routine straight from the training ground !!
The Alphas continued to dominate without crreating many clear chances and defensively were again rock solid with Ibby and Baxo particularly good. But against the run of play Honiton equalised after a keeping error.
The lads responded well with some strong running from new signing Ozzie causing problems for Hoiton. Just before half time the Alphas were back in front. Another training ground set piece came off as Squeaker Phillips swung a great kick into the box for Chip to power home the header.
I would like to write a detailed report of the second half but it would contain too many swear words. Basically it was so one sided for the first 25 mins that we should have been 5 - 1 up at least but missed four one on ones with the keeper and numerous other half chances . Then they came back into it a bit for the last ten mins and me and Sir Baffy Ferguson are stood there watching both knowing that they will equalise. Guess what in the last minute they did just that . Wouldnt have been so bad if it had been a good goal but yet again a mistake has cost us a goal.
A harsh lesson to learn for the lads but in this higher division you have to take your chances in front of goal and if you make a mistake you will be punished at the back.
MoM - Tom Baxter , defensive poetry in motion , should be up the City at least
Yet again thanks to Ian Ibbison for standing in as Referee
