FA VASE : The Carlsberg South West Peninsula League had a great day in the FA Vase with 5 out of 5 possibles all making progress through to the Preliminary Round. In particular the leagues clubs mauled the Western League and ensured that the Peninsula League will not be over looked in the Vase stakes.
Leading the way were our most South Westerley of entrants, Penzance, who beat Western League Premier side Bishops Sutton 1-0, a win over a side 2 steps above them for the Penlee Park club sets up a home toe with Wellington. Another side from our Step 7 Divisions also made progress as East side Newton Abbot won 1-0 away at Western League Division 1 side Keynsham Town to set up a home tie with Harrow Hill of the Hellenic League. Liskeard Athletic made it a hat-trick of Western League scalps with a 1-0 win away at Larkhall Athletic and the Lux Park club now travel to Chard Town. Bodmin Town are also through after they won 3-2 away at Wessex League Shaftesbury to earn a trip to Budleigh Salterton in the next round.
One tie involved 2 Peninsula League clubs with Falmouth Town edging past neighbouring Penryn Athletic 2-0 to book a trip to Hallen. (original news source www.swpleague.co.uk) |

Overall it has to be described as a dissapointing day for the league in the 2nd Qualifying round of the FA Vase. Of the 15 teams in action today only 6 went through to the 1st Round proper on the 6th October and of those only 4 beat teams from other leagues whilst 7 departed against teams from other competitions. That said the 6 sides that did book their places all have good reason to be satisfied with their days.
Plymouth Parkway earnt their win away from home with a good 3-1 win at Hellenic League side Fairford Town with Andy Sargent getting amongst the goals, Liskeard Athletic also won away although they needed extra time to beat Western League side Chard Town on the infamous Zembard Lane slope. Division 1 East side Newton Abbot are through after a 1-0 win at home to another Hellenic League outfit in Harrow Hill and Division 1 West side Porthleven booked their passage with a 3-1 win at home to Western League side Bridport.
Two ties involved only teams from the league and in both cases the under-dogs won after extra time. Budleigh Salterton from Division 1 East saw off highly rated Bodmin Town 4-1 at Greenway Lane after the 90 minute score stood at 1-1. Wadebridge Town from Division 1 West also claimed a Premier Division "scalp" as they won 4-2 at Cullompton Rangers again after extra time was needed, this time following a 2-2 score.
The 7 sides to fall to teams from other leagues were mainly from the Premier Division as Falmouth Town lost 0-3 at Western League Hallen, Launceston were thrashed 1-6 at home to another Western League outfit in Dawlish Town, St Blazey recovered from 0-4 down at Shepton Mallet to eventually go out 3-5 and Saltash United went out 1-4 away at Willand Rovers. Tavistock slipped to a 0-4 defeat at home to Dorset League side Gillingham Town. Two Division 1 West sides went out but against strong opposition, Penzance losing at home to Western League Div 1 leaders Wellington 1-4 whilst Newquay should take heart from only losing 2-3 at home to a Shortwood United side that beat Tiverton Town 3-0 in the FA Cup last week.
